Elaine Borel Foster: A Spiritual Foundation

Written By: Elaine Borel Foster (daughter of Paul and Miriam Borel)

We moved to Sleepy Hollow in 1951 when I was seven years old and I attended Holy Trinity until I left for Kansas University in 1961.

Our parents were very active and supportive members of the church and all of the children were expected to attend every Sunday as well. Pastor Edward Yost was the minister while I was a member.  I remember him visiting our home quite often.  He would sit in the booth at our kitchen table and chat with mother as she cooked.  We were fortunate that she was a housewife and although she had her hands full with six children she volunteered at our schools, was superintendent of the church Sunday School and made sure that we attended every Sunday.  Of course, Dad was just active as usher, vestry and building fund, as well as other efforts.

Luther League was always a highlight, and I remember Sunday School.  This was before the church addition,  so several Sunday School classes met in the sanctuary with only a few pews separating the different age groups.  Only one of my school friends attended the church. I have attached a photo of the Bible Story book that Mr. Johnson, my Sunday School teacher for two years read from.  I liked it so much that Mother bought a copy for me.

Confirmation Class class was taught by Pastor Yost and we met in his office every week for two years.  During that time, we were required to attend church service every Sunday and take notes on the Sermon.  I was confirmed on April 27, 1958 and remember standing in front of the church with my class being drilled with various questions by Pastor Yost. I have the Bible that I received on that day and attached photos of it and also the list of the Apostles I found in it.

The Summer of 1958, I had a part time job in the Holy Trinity office.  I typed the church bulletin and answered the phone.  I rode my bicycle from Sleepy Hollow, through Jefferson Village, down side streets along the highway before crossing it to the church.

My husband and I started attending a Methodist when we were transferred from Kansas City to Milwaukee in 1966 and continued to join and stay active especially in Missions with each Methodist church with moves to Toledo, Dallas, Saint Louis, Columbus and now Charlotte.

I feel that the firm foundation that I received from home and Holy Trinity Church has continued to keep me focused throughout my spiritual journey.  I have been blessed each and every day.

Sending gratitude for the opportunity to share a few of my special memories with you.
