What We Believe

When Lutherans talk about faith, we are talking about a relationship where God’s promise of steadfast love and mercy in Jesus opens us to a life of bold trust in God and joyful, generous service to everyone we know and meet in daily life.

More than 500 years ago, Martin Luther exuberantly described the freedom of “a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that believers would stake their lives on it a thousand times.” He once wrote, “Oh, it is a living, busy, active, mighty thing, this faith. It is impossible for it not to be doing good things unceasingly.”

ELCA Lutherans share in the faith expressed in the Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds, and in Lutheran confessional writings.

But faith does not close our minds to the world and our hearts to others. We listen to the witness of others and we watch for the ways God is active in the world around us. Faith opens a place for engaging others in conversation, for seeking the truth, for asking questions and speaking love in word and deed.

Our History

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church had its beginnings in the late 1940's when Pastor Robert W. Long of Faith Lutheran Church (in Arlington, VA) proposed the organization of a mission congregation in the quickly growing rural area of Falls Church.  As a result, in the fall of 1947, the American Lutheran Church (now the ELCA) purchased three lots at the corner of Arlington Boulevard and Woodlawn Avenue. Rev. Edward F. Yost was called to serve as a temporary assistant for the purpose of developing the new mission church.

On January 24, 1949, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (HTLC) was officially organized with 21 charter members and 13 families from Faith Lutheran Church. The congregation saw rapid growth, and on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1949, HTLC moved its Sunday services to the newly opened Jefferson Theater until a permanent building could be secured.

Groundbreaking for a new church building took place on March 4, 1951. The first worship service, a special Thanksgiving Service, was celebrated in the basement assembly room (still under construction) on November 21, 1951. On December 9, 1951, the congregation (now numbering over 100) dedicated and consecrated the new building.

Now, 75 years later, those same bonds of Christian fellowship remain integral to the life of our church. At Holy Trinity you'll find families with three generations of members as well as many who just recently moved to the area. You will see people coming together for meaningful worship, socializing through weekly online chats and small group activities, participating in classes and discussion groups, and engaging in outreach ministries to those in need.

Come join us and share in the sense of belonging and purpose!
